Beatrix Farrand: Landscape Architect, Yale University

 
This short documentary (5 minutes) explores the landscape design work of Beatrix Farrand, landscape consultant from 1922 to 1945, on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959) is arguably the most successful female landscape architect in early 20th century America and the only female founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
 
The film’s narrative documents some of the most important commissions Beatrix Farrand completed during her 50 year career and her extensive influence on the design of the Yale University campus, including the residential courtyards, the Yale Medical School, and the Marsh Botanical Gardens.  The film includes narration, video and photographs of some of the Beatrix Farrand design elements on the Yale campus, an original score, along with archive material from the Beatrix Farrand Collection at the University of California at Berkeley and the Yale University Library’s Manuscripts and Archives department.
 
The film was was funded by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Yale University and the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, Yale University.
