Documentary Premiere & Panel Discussion, Spring 2018

On March 29, 2018, the Center for Science and Social Science Information 24-Hour Space in Kline Biology Tower held an opening for their media wall exhibit: Beatrix Farrand, Yale’s Pioneering Landscape Architect. 

The opening reception included a screening of a short documentary, Beatrix Farrand: Landscape Architect, Yale University, about Farrand’s two decades of design for the college, including her plans for Marsh Botanic Garden, the residential college courtyards, the president’s garden, and the medical school, among others. The premiere was followed by a panel conversation about Farrand’s work at the college. Speakers included: 

Karyl Evans. Six-time Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker; director and producer of The Life and Gardens of BEATRIX FARRAND; Fellow of Yale University.

Kate Bolick. Contributing editor at The Atlantic, author of the bestselling book Spinster: Making a Life of One’s Own, and host of “Touchstones at The Mount,” an annual literary interview series at Edith Wharton’s country estate in Lenox, MA.

Catherine Phillips. Horticulturalist who has worked in the UK and botanical gardens in the US, most recently at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, Pasadena, CA, and author of ‘Connecticut motive’: Beatrix Farrand and the Marsh Botanic Garden of Yale University 1922-1939.

Beka Sturges. Landscape architect at Reed Hilderbrand, New Haven. Her recent work includes the campus of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, and the allée project at Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY.

Vivian Irish. Eaton Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Chair and Professor, Dept. of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Yale University.
